Topical and Controversial Film Stars Hayden Christensen
as Notorious Former Journalist Stephen Glass
As controversy continues to swirl around the publication of Stephen Glass's "fictional" memoirs, his recent interview on 60 MINUTES and the ongoing Jayson Blair scandal, Lions Gate Films Releasing President Tom Ortenberg announced today that Lions Gate will open its film SHATTERED GLASS on October 17.
The fascinating exploration of what VANITY FAIR described as the "longest-running hoax in journalistic history" is based on the meteoric rise and spectacular fall of journalist Stephen Glass amid charges that he fabricated 27 of the 41 articles he wrote as the Associate Editor at the prestigious New Republic as well as freelance pieces for George, Rolling Stone, Harpers and other publications. Lions Gate Films is the motion picture production and distribution arm of Lions Gate Entertainment (AMEX:LGF) (TSX:LGF).
"As new developments continue to unfold, there is a particular timeliness and relevance to the telling of this story of journalistic fraud," said Ortenberg. "Billy Ray has made a thought-provoking cautionary tale for our time, featuring a charismatic lead performance by Hayden Christensen as Stephen Glass and a searing performance by Peter Sarsgaard as Chuck Lane, Glass' editor at the New Republic and the man who finally exposed his lies. We are proud to have produced this extraordinary film and are looking forward to bringing it to filmgoing audiences everywhere this Fall."
"We are extremely proud to have helped bring this timely and important tale about ethics in journalism to the screen," said Paula Wagner of Cruise / Wagner Productions. "Billy Ray is a gifted writer who makes a truly impactful directorial debut. Hayden Christensen gives a memorable and compelling performance as Stephen Glass, and Peter Sarsgaard beautifully illuminates the character of Chuck Lane."
"The quality and strength of the entire cast have created an incendiary experience that will have many discussing the film long after the credits roll," Craig Baumgarten of Baumgarten Merims said. "Billy Ray has crafted a masterful tale that is a timeless lesson for all."
SHATTERED GLASS also stars Hank Azaria ("America's Sweetheart") as Glass' first editor at the New Republic, Michael Kelly; Steve Zahn ("Happy Texas") as Adam Penenberg, the journalist who helped to expose Glass as a fraud; as well as Chloe Sevigny and Rosario Dawson. SHATTERED GLASS is based on the 1998 Vanity Fair article by Buzz Bissinger.
Written and directed by Billy Ray, the film is jointly produced by Lions Gate Films, Cruise / Wagner Productions and Baumgarten Merims in association with Forest Park Pictures. The film's executive producers are Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner of Cruise / Wagner as well as Lions Gate executives Michael Paseornek, Marc Butan and Tom Ortenberg. "Shattered Glass" is being produced by Craig Baumgarten, Adam Merims, Gaye Hirsch and Tove Christensen.
