Lingering air mass extends its stay.

Byline: Diane Dietz The Register-Guard

The Willamette Valley's air through Thanksgiving Day will be stagnant, dirty and difficult for people with delicate or unhealthy lungs, officials said Monday.

To protect the air quality from further deterioration, the state Department of Forestry banned burning on all forests statewide beginning Monday.

The Department of Environmental Quality asked people not to use fireplaces or wood stoves unless necessary for heat. Officials first made the no-fires request early last week.

Outdoor burning is prohibited.

"It looks like this stable air mass will continue into Thanksgiving Day," Jim Trost, forestry department meteorologist, said in a news release. "Then a trough moves in Friday, that will force the high pressure out, the winds will pick up and mixing will improve, allowing us to start burning again."

Forest burning is used to remove logging slash and reduce brush in order to prevent wildfires.

Idaho on Monday issued a ban on forest burning due to similar atmospheric conditions there.
