Stearns joined the Montreal company as a dancer in 1961. Her stage career ended abruptly in 1966 when she reluctantly agreed to become assistant ballet mistress bal´let` mis´tress n. 1. a woman who trains ballet dancers. She applied herself to the new post with the capability and artistry that marked her twenty-eight years with the company overall. In 1978, with Repetiteur Daniel Jackson and Director General Colin McIntyre, Stearns introduced modern dance hallmarks like Doris Humphrey's Soaring to the company, causing confusion among dancers and spectators as to the company's identity. Triumvirates were common in the Roman republic. dissolved and Steams and Quebec dance pioneer Jeanne Renaud were named co-artistic directors. When audiences resisted the perceived abandonment of the classics, Renaud resigned and Steams stayed on to rebuild the company. She retired from Les Grands in 1989 and soon forged an international career as a guest ballet mistress, working for British ice dance champions Christopher Dean and Jayne Torvill, Southern Ballet Theatre in Orlando, Florida, and Canada's Alberta Ballet and Ballet Jorgen, among others. Born to a wealthy Toronto family, Stearns studied in Toronto, London, and at the School of American Ballet The School of American Ballet is located in New York City, in Lincoln Center.
