Limbs snap power lines; thousands lose electricity.

Byline: The Register-Guard

The sound of chain saws filled the still air as utility trucks and road crews were busy Thursday working to restore electricity to about 5,000 people around Lane County who lost power because of the storm.

The bulk of the damage occurred in the mostly heavily wooded south hills of Eugene. Particularly hard hit was Fox Hollow Road near Donald Street, as well as Lorane Highway near Madison Street, where tree limbs littered the roadway after buckling under the weight of wet snow.

About 3,000 Eugene Water & Electric Board customers were left with no power early Thursday. Meanwhile, about 1,500 Lane Electric Cooperative customers were without power as of Thursday night, said Dave Davanzo, Lane Electric member services manager. Scattered outages were reported in Oakridge, Fall Creek Fall Creek is the name of several places in the United States:

. Service to some will not be restored for at least a couple of days, Davanzo said.

By 7 p.m., all but seven of those customers had electricity again.

Springfield Utility Board was spared major outages, with only about 100 customers briefly without power, spokeswoman Mary Ann Rhodes said. "We had scattered outages with maybe one or two customers on some blocks. But we were able to restore service immediately."

The falling trees and power lines were a hazardous mix in some cases. Traffic was rerouted for most of Thursday afternoon on River Road near Park Avenue when a tree limb caught in a power line.

Shortly before noon, a branch from a mammoth oak tree at Oakmont Road and Oakmont Way in Eugene fell onto a power line and blocked a portion of Oakmont Road. The tree, which measured 6 feet in diameter at the trunk, was in John Dick's front yard.

"I don't think there's much left of that old tree," Dick said.

Two hours later, some passersby armed with chain saws were clearing the debris.

"I jumped out and starting cutting up the tree. There's no telling when the city will get to it," Scott Moore
