Likens hurls, hits North to victory.


Byline: The Register-Guard

Ashley Likens allowed just one hit and struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout as North Eugene handed visiting Lebanon a 2-0 loss in Midwestern League softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  action Monday afternoon.

La Pine 10, Creswell 9

LA PINE - Brittany Manning allowed two hits and struck out 10 while also going 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Hawks to a win in a game played in the snow and sleet sleet, precipitation of small, partially melted grains of ice. As raindrops fall from clouds, they pass through layers of air at different temperatures. If they pass through a layer with a temperature below the freezing point, they turn into sleet. .

Jesse Griebel added an RBI triple for La Pine. Lindsey Roderick and Amanda Marsh each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Trico League

Monroe 7, Harrisburg 6

MONROE - Sarah Wheatley hit an RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Shiann Ashenbrenner with the game-winning run. Wheatley and Ashenbrenner each finished with three hits. Melissa Powell went 3-for-4 with two doubles for Harrisburg.

Val-Co League

Newport 7, Toledo 1

TOLEDO - The Cubs' Melissa Chipman struck out nine in her complete-game one-hitter, and she also drove in three runs on two hits.

Mortanna Nicosen and Brooke Chestnut each had two hits for Newport.
