Paul Lipscomb, who says his 6-year-old child, Zachary, is transgendered, now says that he himself plans to transition from male to female. The Westerville, Ohio, man's declaration will no doubt complicate his and wife Sherry's efforts to regain custody of Zachary, who was put into foster care in August when the Lipscombs attempted to enroll the child in first grade as a girl named Aurora. The Lipscombs say Zachary was diagnosed with gender identity disorder.

Rebecca Steele, the public defender representing the child's interests in court, testified in September that she believes the Lipscombs are using Zachary to gain sympathy for themselves. "There is suspicion of Munchausen syndrome by proxy," Steele said, referring to the psychological term for when care providers harm a child to call attention to themselves. Franklin County Children Services officials say the child has not expressed a desire to wear dresses since being in foster care.
