Lights! Cameras! Studio makeover!: when ABC's hit reality show decided to make over Carol Crawford Smith's home, they didn't stop there.

ABC-TV's Extreme Makeover Home Edition grants house-sized wishes to deserving families, recruiting local business and communities to help their neighbors. When the construction team picked Carol Crawford Smith, a former Dance Theatre of Harlem Dance Theatre of Harlem, the first black classical ballet company. Smith had founded the nearby Center of Dance in 1994, but has suffered recently from multiple sclerosis. The Center needed an update as urgently as her home, so the team dove in. The Center of Dance, which offers ballet, contemporary jazz, tap, and African movement to live drums, has 75 to 100 students. It's on the second floor of an old building and the stairs were becoming a problem for me. I told them what I needed, but I didn't know what they'd do.

The first thing I saw when they unveiled the makeover was a wonderful illuminated sign illuminated sign illuminate nLeuchtzeichen nt  with an image of a dancer. Then they had installed automatic doors leading to the lobby and added a lift to the stairs that takes me to the second level. The door to the studio also now opens automatically and they installed new barres and a new floor with marley for safe dancing. I always encourage parents to watch class; they're part of the learning process, too. Now they can watch via a camera in the studio and a monitor in the lobby area.

The final surprise came when current members of the Dance Theatre of Harlem School performed an excerpt ex·cerpt
