. The website explains that the chosen tree rarely comes from the woods, since Norway spruce, the usual choice, is not native to the U.S. and therefore must be found from ornamental plantings-a single tree planted in a front or backyard.

It includes much of Gogebic County, Michigan, and Ontonagon County, Michigan, as well as slices of Baraga, Houghton, and Iron Counties.  in Michigan and was decorated with several thousand handmade ornaments representing the tree's home state.
