She taught piano to students age 7 through adult during her active years of teaching. Her basic philosophy, in music and in life, is to enjoy what you are doing and "make it personal." Beyond the basics of reading music and understanding rhythm, she advises, "Help each student find something rewarding in their studies."

Of many memorable students, a particular exchange comes to Clizer's mind. "I traded lessons for a portrait," she says. "One adult student wanted to learn the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata. She was a talented artist, and in exchange for lessons and learning the movement, she did a lovely portrait of myself and it made a very special memento."

Mavorette Flummerfelt

"I will be 90, but I'm very, very young with lots of spirit," says Mavorette Flummerfelt, NCTM, of Vincennes, Indiana This article is about the United States city, Vincennes. For other uses, see Vincennes %28disambiguation%29.

, and she follows the "Music Tree" approach of Louise Goss n. 1. Gorse.  and the late Frances Clark.

"They've revised their books several times, but I started hearing of Frances Clark way back in 1957," she says. "I've used other approaches, but I favor the interval approach, learning to play all over the keyboard from the very first lesson, rather than the middle-C approach. I also like to teach their way of combining private and group lessons."

In addition to teaching, she plays piano for church, other organizations and as an accompanist.

As an active member of the Indiana State Music Teachers Association, Flummerfelt served on the certification committee and as corresponding secretary. She also is a member of the Wabash Valley The Wabash Valley is a region with parts in both Illinois and Indiana. For those who haven't continued with musical careers after leaving her studio, Mavorette says, "It's just an extra thing; they've learned to appreciate music."

Helen Curtis Gaw

Helen Curtis Gaw, NCTM, was in high school when she started teaching. A second-generation teacher, Helen has inspired students for fifty-six years and is active in her studio and with her local Music Teachers Association in Shreveport, Louisiana.

"My parents were both piano teachers. My dad taught piano at the New England Conservatory of Music New England Conservatory of Music, at Boston, Mass.; coeducational; est. 1867, chartered and opened 1870. It is closely associated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood.  for many, many years, so he and my mother were my first piano teachers," she says.

As a founding member of the Greater Shreveport Music Teachers Association, which recently celebrated forty years as an affiliate group, Gaw has held many offices, including her current third term as local president. She also chairs the Louisiana Music Teachers Association (LMTA LMTA Louisiana Music Teachers Association

) Arts Awareness and Advocacy Board. In 1965, she represented the Southern Division on the initial certification board, establishing the first guidelines for teacher certification, and subsequently served several years as chair of LMTA's certification board.

Helen interviews both prospective students and parents at the onset of lessons. "I want to respect the family's preferences in music without compromising a proper foundation in repertoire, technique, theory, ear training and music history," she says. "Qualify the students and see what their goal is.... Don't try to make performers out of students who just want to play for their own enjoyment."

She advises new teachers to require maximum effort from students. "I will work tirelessly with an average student who I believe is trying their best, but it is not productive to continue with a student who consistently comes to the lesson unprepared.

"I do think it is important to record students and have them listen to the recording," she says of her methods. She consistently sets goals with her students, entering them in festivals and area auditions. "I also share my extensive library of recordings with my students, and I take them to recitals and the symphony." In 1993, Gaw was honored with LMTA's Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award.

Margaret E. Nichols

For Margaret Nichols, NCTM, of Oak Park, Illinois Oak Park, Illinois is a suburb just west of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Oak Park has easy access to downtown Chicago (the Chicago Loop) thanks to public transportation such as the Chicago 'L', CTA buses, and Metra commuter rail. , education is a lifelong pursuit. Her contagious can-do approach allows her to be a role model for many students in her sixty-plus years as a teacher.

She cites going to workshops sponsored by MTNA and other music-oriented organizations as a way to expand one's knowledge of music and pedagogy. "You meet musical friends you might not have otherwise," she says. "If you haven't been with a professional teaching group, it is time to listen to another person's point of view. Don't be afraid to try something new."

Since 1983, Margaret has taught at the Sherwood Conservatory in Chicago. She typically leads a group class of six using two grand pianos. "It's one of the most painless ways to become abreast of the times, in the manner people express themselves in the music field," she says of group learning. "We have a mixed group and it's wonderful because they all speak a different type of language. We've been doing some lead sheet reading, and if you're talking to seventy-seven-year-olds, unless they know jazz, they don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what a lead sheet is." The younger members of the class educate the older members, and vice versa VICE VERSA. On the contrary; on opposite sides. .

"Be open to new ways of doing things," Margaret says. "If you're going to be a part of a group, share your interests."

Nichols prefers a more universal approach--lessons should be about cultivating a love of the instrument and appreciation of music in general. There are not many skills still viable to people like her mother, who continued to play music at age 96. "That is a tribute to what music can mean over a lifetime," she says.
