Liebert Corporation recently announced the creation of its new state-of-the-art Liebert XD Test Lab. The new lab was designed to replicate current and potential extreme density heat scenarios to help enable faster and more accurate evaluation of new technologies designed to eliminate hot spots in the data center. The Liebert XD Test Lab, located at the company's engineering and manufacturing facility in Columbus, Ohio, uses heating coils within computer enclosures to simulate average heat densities of up to 500 watts per square foot and zone heat loads of more than 1,000 watts per square foot. The facility includes 840 square feet of raised floor containing four aisles of server simulation equipment. Fluid dynamic modeling is used to analyze air flows and identify the efficiency and effectiveness of various technologies and system configurations. The lab was instrumental in the development of the new Liebert XD family of cooling solutions. Introduced in January 2003, the Liebert XD family features rack-mounte d and ceiling-mounted systems that use a coolant new to data center applications. According to tests performed in the lab, the company estimates that the new coolant is 85 percent more efficient than water-based systems and, because it exists only as an environmentally friendly gas within the controlled environment, helps eliminate the risk of fluid damage.
