Kathy Mockensturm of Toledo, Ohio, shares her idea for addressing the state's fourth-grade standards for math: I combine the benchmark for metric and standard measurements with the one for driving safety by having my students make their own driver's licenses. First we measure and weigh each student (converting feet to meters and pounds to kilograms). Then, using a real driver's license as a guide, the students attach photos of themselves to card-stock and write their information. After we laminate the licenses, I pass out a driving test for everyone to take. I include questions such as, "A seat belt must be worn at all times. True or false?" The kids love discussing the rules of the road, and they are very proud to show off their driver's licenses.
