A new user-friendly interface and improved functionality allow users to easily search across different data sources, such as legislative histories, published or unpublished hearings, bills, and House and Senate reports -- all within a single search. Once again, LexisNexis has revolutionized the way congressional information can be retrieved; this time by simplifying its search interface and enhancing its controlled vocabulary Controlled vocabularies are used in subject indexing schemes, subject headings, thesauri and taxonomies. Controlled vocabulary schemes mandate the uses of predefined, authorised terms that have been preselected by the designer of the controlled vocabulary as opposed to natural indexing. When a user begins their search they have three primary options: 1) The Basic Search form allows novice and advanced users to conduct general searches in either natural language or with Boolean connectors of abstracts, titles, controlled vocabulary and other bibliographic data, excluding full text for fast, relevant, targeted results. 2) The Advanced Search allows for flexibility and specificity. This gives more experienced users the ability to search in both full text and metadata for optimum results. Here the user can choose to access one, all, or a combination of collections in their subscription. 3) The Search By Number form is for targeted searches of congressional publications that reference a bill, or a publication number, or are associated with a public law or other numbered information. Search by Number helps users find a specific record by publication number, SuDoc or CIS Cis (sĭs), same as Kish (1.) (1) (CompuServe Information Service) See CompuServe. Search options can be restricted by date, or Congress, as well as full text, or only metadata. Enhanced segment searching can pinpoint information by source, subject, title, witness, witness affiliation, or author. LexisNexis Congressional also provides the option of downloading large documents in different sections. "It's exciting to work on a project of this magnitude because it's giving academia access to a complete and easy-to-use repository of congressional information," says Tim Fusco, vice president of publishing operations for LexisNexis Corporate and Federal Markets. "After all, the U.S. Congress is one of the world's best information sources for understanding public policy, history, sociology, political science, technology and our society." The LexisNexis Congressional redesign is a result of the LexisNexis vision to provide users with the ability to simultaneously search across related collections, such as hearings, House and Senate reports and documents, legislative histories, and the U.S. Serial Set documents and maps.
