Leunen, Taylor among finalists.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Oregon seniors-to-be Maarty Leunen and Bryce Taylor are two of the 14 finalists for the USA Pan-American Games men's basketball team, USA Basketball officials announced Sunday.

Two more players will be cut after two more training sessions ending July 21. The final 12-player roster will compete at the Pan-Am Games in Brazil from July 25-29.

Leunen, a 6-foot-10 center, and Taylor, a 6-6 forward, were among four Pac-10 players chosen as finalists. Washington State's Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver are also among the finalists.

Other finalists are Josh Carter of Texas A&M, Joey Dorsey of Memphis, Wayne Ellington of North Carolina, Shan Foster of Vanderbilt, James Gist of Maryland, Roy Hibbert of Georgetown, Eric Maynor of Virginia Commonwealth, Drew Neitzel of Michigan State, Scottie Reynolds of Villanova and D.J. White of Indiana.

Nelson finishes second at Spokane golf event

SPOKANE - Birk Nelson, representing Monroe's Diamond Woods Golf Course, fnished tied for second place at the Rosauers Open Championship on Sunday at Indian Canyon Golf Course.

Nelson shot a course-record-tying 10-under-par 61 on Sunday to move into a tie with Casey McCoy of Hood River at 16-under 197 for the tournament.

Cody Upham of Portland's Columbia-Edgewater Country Club won the tournament with a 17-under-par score of 196.

Toy, Buerstatte lead Lightning to state title

Brooke Toy hit a solo home run in the first inning and Chloe Buerstatte had two singles and an RBI to lead the Eugene Lightning to a 2-0 victory over the Hillsboro Thunder in the championship game of the 18A state softball tournament on Sunday at Shasta Softball Complex.

Toy was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as the Lightning started the day with a 5-3 win over the Hillsboro team.

Hillsboro came back to defeat the Lightning 13-0 to necessitate a third game in the double-elimination tournament.

The Lightning (22-11) qualified for the national tournament in College Station, Texas, July 30-Aug. 5, but instead will compete in the Western Nationals tournament in Lancaster, Calif., on the same dates.

Titans fall to Post 9

in pitcher's duel

SALEM - Cody Garner had two singles to lead an eight-hit attack for the Quality Financial Group Titans of Springfield in a 2-1 American Legion Area 3 baseball loss to Salem Post No. 9 on Sunday.

Dylan Price reached base on a drag bunt single in the third inning and scored the Titans' only run on a single by Colin Schauermann.
