like pretzels and chips would have been a pretty gloomy read.

Chips were too fatty and pretzels were too salty. The chips that weren't tasted like cardboard, and the pretzels that weren't would make good dog biscuits dog biscuits nplbiscuits mpl pour chien

. End of story.

Don't get us wrong. Those of you with a taste for building supplies still have a nice selection to choose from. But a growing number of companies now have fat-free products that taste much more like the real thing. And almost everybody has lower-fat or lower-salt versions for those of us not quite ready to make the big jump.

That's not to say the salty snack aisle still isn't a minefield. So here's a map.

PRETZELS

If low fat is your priority, pretzels is your category. That's because they're baked, not fried. Few have more than a gram of fat in a one-ounce serving (about 50 sticks or one big pretzel).

Why Snyder's of Hanover Snyder's of Hanover is a bakery and snack food distribution company based in Hanover, Pennsylvania, specializing in pretzels. Its products are sold throughout the United States, Canada, many European nations, southeast Asia, and in the Middle East.  decided to cram five or more grams of fat into some flavors of its Pretzel Pieces beats us. Ditto for Combos Pretzels.

The fatties aside, it's salt you've got to watch out for. Unless the label says "no salt," "no salt added," or "unsalted," you're going to get a hefty dose---at least 400 to 600 milligrams of sodium per ounce.

And a snacker unlucky enough to pick up some Bachman Stix can make that almost 1,500 mg. Poor More than half-a-day's shot of salt in a handful or two.

If you don't like the taste of unsalted pretzels (they can be pretty flat, especially the whole wheats), buy the regular kind and scrape off most of the salt with your finger. That'll leave you with far less sodium...and more than enough zip.

POTATO CHIPS

The last time we looked (May 1989), the lowest-fat potato chip (six grams per ounce-- about 17 chips) was Ruffles For the plural of ruffle, see .
Ruffles is the name of a brand of ruffled potato chips produced by Frito-Lay. Its current official product slogan is "R-R-R-Ruffles Have Ridges!".There is a lot of different kinds of chips.
Light. What do you expect from fried potato slices?

This month we found four entire lines of chips with less than one gram of fat per ounce. But fat-free chip technology is still developing (they're mostly baked or microwaved), so let taste be your guide.

When we tried Louise's Fat-Free chips last May, we loved their crisp, light, chip-like taste. When we tried them this month, they tasted stale and tough. The company tells us that it's had some quality control problems.

This time around, we liked FitFoods Fat-Free. Friday Harbor's fat-free chips, on the other hand, were stiff yet chewy chew·y

, sort of like raw potato.

If the fat-free chips just don't do it for you, Ruffles Light or Michael Season's 40% Less Fat will set you back six grams. Yet they taste like they've got the 10 grams of most full-fat chips.

TORTILLA CHIPS

The healthiest tortilla chips, like the healthiest tortillas, contain just four ingredients: corn, water, salt, and lime.

Guiltless Gourmet Guiltless Gourmet is a snack food brand. It was founded in 1989 by Doug Forman, who was looking to create a healthy chip. The first tortilla chips were created in his kitchen and distributed locally. The brand became very popular and grew quickly.  may have started the no-oil, almost-fat-free tortilla chip craze a couple of years ago. But today you can find similar products by Tostitos, Fat Free Gourmet, Smart Temptations, and Barbara's.

American Grains Popsters-- with their fresh potato taste and nice crunch--were the clear winners of our taste test. We also liked American Grains Tortilia Bites.

Barbara's Cheese Puff Lights, on the other hand, are only "light" if you ignore the company's bogus quarter-ounce serving. Puff up the serving size to a more-realistic one ounce and the fat jumps to 12 grams--worse than the fattiest potato chip.

MISCELLANEOUS

Pita chips Pita chips are simply a baked bread made from pita bread, often seasoned. They are crunchier and thicker than most chips. They are available in many flavors. They are often used as a substitute for potato chips because they are less greasy and generally healthier. , bagel chips, multi-grain chips, carrot chips, sweet potato sweet potato, trailing perennial plant (Ipomoea batatas) of the family Convolvulaceae (morning glory family), native to the New World tropics. Forget it.

An ounce of the lowest-fat chip has four grams of fat. That's twice as much as our cutoff for a "Best Bite." An ounce of the fattiest (Hain Carrot Chips or Terra Sweet Potato Chips) has nine grams --potato chip territory.
