BLACK WEALTH

students in personal finance and investing in the stock market. In recent months, I have become accustomed to relying on the great articles that have appeared in BLACK ENTERPRISE for discussions and guidance. But I must tell you the January 2000 issue is absolutely invaluable.

My students have been learning the practical aspects of investing by jointly researching and selecting stocks to invest in and making actual purchases within the $5,000 account that was made available to them at the beginning of the school year. Whatever profit accrues from their investment at the end of the year will be given to them to start their own investment club.

This week we discussed the Black Wealth Initiative and the Declaration of Financial Independence that appeared in this month's edition of BE. Copies were given out for them to take home to their parents. From the enthusiasm showed by the students, I feel certain that these two documents will change many lives for the better down the road.

Many thanks for a great magazine and keep up the good work in providing your readers with the tools for a brighter future.

OUR LEGACY

I am a subscriber of BE who enjoys reading every issue. In the January 2000 issue, I read your column, "Let Our Wealth Be Our Legacy" (Publisher's Page).

We African Americans African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  need to continue to strive to accumulate wealth and invest wisely. [However], accumulating wealth, although important, should not be our sole legacy. Ours should be a legacy of a people who believed in God and were enslaved Enslaved may refer to:
  • Slavery, the socio-economic condition of being owned and worked by and for someone else
  • Submissive (BDSM), people playing the 'slave' part in BDSM
  • Enslaved (band), a progressive black metal/Viking metal band from Haugesund, Norway
for more than two centuries. God delivered us from slavery and through God's blessings and mercy we were able to accumulate considerable wealth in the land of our oppression.

We should also support our churches. The black church has sustained us and enabled us to overcome the forces of evil against great odds. More emphasis needs to be placed on the continuing role of the black church in enabling us to accomplish what we have accomplished.

It was interesting to read your January 2000 issue on building black wealth. Your Declaration of Financial Empowerment touched my spirit because two years ago, I was elected treasurer of the Allen Investment Ministry (AIM).

This goes to show you what folks can do with $20 per month. I look to BE for suggestions on how to keep our club motivated.
