Letters.Negative Numbers It is unfortunate that the Business Journal chose to write on the $125 million California Lottery advertising account ("No Winner for Lottery," May 19) with an unbalanced and, at times, negative perspective. Joan Wilson Chief Executive California Lottery Wrong Track Lam writing to correct some wrong impressions that may have been created by the article about the Alameda Corridor The Alameda Corridor is a 20 mile (32 km) freight rail "expressway"[1] owned by the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority (AAR reporting marks ATAX ("Shippers Shun Shun In Chinese mythology, one of the three legendary emperors, along with Yao and Da Yu, of the golden age of antiquity (c. 23rd century BC), singled out by Confucius as models of integrity and virtue. Alameda Corridor Over Costs," May 19). While changes in shipping practices are affecting the percentage of cargo containers transported by rail on the Alameda Corridor versus by truck on the freeways, the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority is meeting revenue projections and making payments to bondholders. Several points must be emphasized. The percentage of containers imported and exported through the Ports of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. and Long Beach and transported on the Alameda Corridor is below estimates, but the actual number of containers is consistent with projections, because trade through the ports is increasing at a greater rate than expected. This means the original annual revenue projected for the obligations ports could be less than anticipated and perhaps even eliminated. Shuttle trains are one component. Better utilization of existing on-dock container loading rail facilities and new near-dock loading facilities are among the solutions being studied. The Alameda Corridor is averaging 35 trains per day, as originally expected for 2003. But it could accommodate more than 100 trains per day because it was designed for 2020 container volume projections. Shipper SHIPPER.
