Bad Vibes

I hate to break it to Mark Lacter ("Don't Move, It's Not That Bad' April 7), but it is bad, it is getting worse and many, many businesses in California are starting to cut back, shut down or move.

I have lived in Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern , the Central Valley and Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, . I am already planning my exit from the state. The future does not look promising. It looks ugly.

This is not due to the general economic conditions determined by the marketplace but by the boys and girls boys and girls

Islam and Women

I'm perplexed by Andrew Ferguson's commentary, "Can Muslim World Respect Rights?" (April 14). His assertion of a differential in attitudes toward women leaders between Western and. Muslim countries simply isn't true.

How does he explain the fact that four predominantly Muslim countries -- Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia - have elected women as heads of state? Only the U.K., Canada (briefly) and the Scandinavian countries have had female heads of state in the West.

Though sometimes flawed (as it is here), democracy functions in these and other predominantly Muslim countries. Iran's vice president is a woman; there are more women in the Iranian Parliament than in the U.S. Senate.

Secondly, the concepts of private property, education and commerce have existed among Muslim women since the earliest times. The Prophet Mohammed's first wife ran her own trading business. Education for all was an emphasis among Muslims of old. If there are men today who subjugate sub·ju·gate

women and blame it on Islam, we should not follow suit.

I wonder how the U.S. would fare if we evaluated women's views on access to education and quality health care here.
