Letters.Unfair Look at CaliforniaMart As representatives of the tenant base of CaliforniaMart, we are responding to your March 13 article "Showrooms for Sale," featuring CaliforniaMart and its search for new ownership. We are greatly disappointed by the article. CaliforniaMart is unmistakably un·mis·tak·a·ble adj. Impossible to mistake or misinterpret; obvious: unmistakable signs of illness. un the most important business center for the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. fashion industry. In addition to being the largest showroom facility in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or and representing all categories of merchandise, CaliforniaMart houses more than 900 occupied showrooms, featuring thousands of individual lines, plus 12 buying offices, five banks, several trade associations, two fashion trade publications, two parking structures and a fashion design college. Addressing some factual issues, your article failed to address significant differences between CalifornlaMart and the New Mart including: The New Mart is owned by a charitable trust The arrangement by which real or Personal Property given by one person is held by another to be used for the benefit of a class of persons or the general public. and as such, Joyce Joyce - A distributed language based on Pascal and CSP, by Per Brinch Hansen. CaliforniaMart's temporary exhibit space that houses manufacturers from all over the world is the same size as the entire New Mart building. CaliforniaMart's ownership-funded marketing programs promote the entire wellbeing of the L.A. fashion industry, within a district that accounts for $7.4 billion in annual revenue. CaliforniaMart is the sole producer, sponsor and host location for L.A. Fashion Week, the L.A. International Textile Show, the L.A. Shoe Show, and the International Swim and Activewear Show, drawing 4,000-5,000 buyers each season. New Mart attracts just 400-500 buyers per show. It is in the best interests of Los Angeles that a prospective new owner continues the legacy of CaliforniaMart, not only for the tenants who have built business here, but to continue to support the entire L.A. fashion community. This article reflects poorly upon your publication that has regularly neglected an incredible industry that provides jobs to nearly 150,000 workers. The attempt to discredit the legacy of a 33-year-old institution in the downtown fashion district not only damages its prospects for sale, it discounts the value of the 150,000-plus employees who work in the industry. Located at the heart of downtown's fashion district, CaliforniaMart serves as the hub of fashion business in Los Angeles. In addition to being the largest showroom facility in downtown Los Angeles and representing all categories of the marketplace, CaliforniaMart houses 12 buying offices, five banks, several trade associations, two fashion trade publications and a fashion design college. Additionally, CaliforniaMart is a large exhibition facility with more than 200,000 square feet of exhibition space. The New Mart's 250,000 square feet of gross leasable space, which houses only one third of the marketplace's categories, represents approximately one floor plate of CaliforniaMart. In addition to the obvious differences in size and marketplace representation, the article failed to mention a significant difference between CaliforniaMart and the New Mart. The New Mart is owned by a charitable trust and as such, Joyce Eisenberg Keefer is bound by law to contribute a portion of the property's income to charity. CaliforniaMart, because of its large corporate ownership, is able to support everyone with showroom space in downtown Los Angeles. In addition to producing five Los Angeles Fashion Weeks Los Angeles Fashion Week takes place each March (for fall collections) and October (for spring collections) in locations throughout the Los Angeles Area. History annually, CaliforniaMart produces North America's largest textile show twice a year. These trade events draw more than 40,000 visitors to downtown Los Angeles annually. This corporate ownership also enables CaliforniaMart to invest several million dollars annually in marketing programs that support the entire Los Angeles Fashion District.
