Bush reveals double standard

When Israel targets the leaders of the terrorist-murderers of Hamas for assassination, Bush becomes upset and demands that Israel stop trying to protect its own people. Can Bush spell "hypocrisy?"

Dean's speech was inspiring

The Register-Guard's lack of news coverage about Howard Dean's June 23 speech was a disservice to its readers and to everyone seeking an alternative to Bush administration policies of pre-emptive pre·emp·tive or pre-emp·tive
adj.
1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of preemption.

2. Having or granted by the right of preemption.

3.

war, service cuts for the poor and "no-millionaire-left-behind" tax cuts.

Dean declared his candidacy with an inspiring speech to 5,000 people in Vermont and thousands more throughout America via the Internet. Meanwhile, President Bush raised $4 million from a few so-called "rangers and pioneers" who are funding his $200 million campaign.

The essence of Dean's message for America is: "You have the power to reclaim our nation's destiny. You have the power to rid Washington of the politics of money. You have the power to make right as important as might. You have the power to give Americans a reason to vote again. You have the power to restore our nation to fiscal sanity and bring jobs back to our people. You have the power to fulfill Harry Truman's dream and bring health insurance to every American. You have the power to give us a foreign policy consistent with American values again. You have the power to take back the Democratic party. You have the power to take our country back. And we have the power to take the White House back in 2004."

I encourage Register-Guard readers to review the complete speech at www.deanforamerica.com. And, as an independent voter, I respectfully request that the newspaper's editors give Democratic candidates the news coverage they deserve.

Native Americans forgotten

Arguments against the Centennial Boulevard name change tout the commemoration of Oregon's statehood state·hood

Yet Oregon was here thousands of years before the pioneers, and pioneers are not ancestors to all. Yet again, the Native Americans are forgotten. Every street and building in this area is a monument to the great pioneers.

or Keiko's stay in Newport. Would these letter writers rise with such an opposition to a new stadium, big-box store or convention center?

I've read letters stating that Indians moving to "our area" to work at the casino will bring social unrest, drunken behavior and a drain on social services. I've read lies about casino hiring policies. I've read of evangelists organizing attacks on Native American sovereignty.

Is a casino or a street name change as heartbreaking and stressful as having your entire family and way of life forcibly destroyed? Is it as bad as leaving your family members dead along a trail? How about being forced to eat rotten meat and government subsidies on a reservation?

Even worse, imagine those around you ignoring all of these horrific events and instead complaining about increased traffic and a name on a street sign.

God is both loving, wrathful wrath·ful
adj.
1. Full of wrath; fiercely angry.

2. Proceeding from or expressing wrath: wrathful vengeance. See Synonyms at angry.

I want to respond to Jim Herriott's letter of June 25.

The Bible shows that God is both loving and wrathful. However, the Bible shows that God is usually loving, merciful and caring. An example is John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten be·got·ten

It is written that God does not delight in the destruction of any man, but desires that all be saved. As for babies being sinners, all humans are born of flesh, descended from Adam and Eve Adam and Eve

. Thus, all inherit Adam's nature.

Jesus said to enter the kingdom of heaven a man must be born again. Born of water and the spirit of God. Through Jesus each one of us can be born again and inherit eternal life. God has given us the way to salvation. He has not withheld it. This gift is from a loving God, wouldn't you agree? Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.

Drivers must stop, wait

I feel a real need to respond to the June 20 letter from Lawrence J. Brauer about the waste of taxpayer money by the Eugene Police Department. His show of complete ignorance of the laws that protect human lives shows he is the type of person the EPD EPD

expected progeny difference.
is trying to stop from running through crosswalks.

Who cares if the person walking across the street was talking to himself.? It is still the responsibility of the driver to stop and wait for them to cross. It makes no difference if the person looks scary, as long as they remain in the crosswalk, and don't make an aggressive move towards the driver. As the wife of a police officer, I hear every day the excuses and lies my husband is told by people trying to get out of a ticket.

Brauer is the type of person who blames the police for everything. If he were injured by a motorist while he was in a crosswalk legally, then the police would be a fault for not being there to stop people from hitting pedestrians.

Next time Brauer writes a letter, he should check his facts. Very few officers, even after years on the force, make $20 per hour.

EPD is attempting to prevent pedestrian versus car accidents through prevention so they can have the manpower to cover the truly serious situations.

Robbery? Lawrence J. Brauer robbed people of three minutes of their time reading his mindless drivel driv·el

And, just so Brauer knows, they are police officers not cops. He should show some respect.

Letter revealed prejudice

Shame on The Register-Guard for publishing Ron Black's letter containing offensive remarks (letters, June 22) that were anti-Semitic in tone, if not in intent.

Surely The Register-Guard could have published a letter criticizing the Bush administration's policies in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf that did not rely on stereotypes of Jews dominating American foreign policy to further a pro-Israel agenda. Black's characterization of the Middle East road map, an evenhanded e·ven·hand·ed

Would The Register-Guard publish letters containing demeaning de·mean 1

Why does The Register-Guard tolerate letters that resort to similar prejudices when the subject is this country's historical and bipartisan support for Israel?

Casino will help economy

I would like to address the controversial issue of a casino in Florence. I fully support it, and am a member of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians are also known as the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, and are a United States Bureau of Indian Affairs-recognized Native American tribal entity. .

The group that calls itself People Against a Casino Town (PACT) does not represent all of Florence and, in fact, represents only a small percentage of people. PACT should stand for "Prejudiced Arrogant Counterproductive Troublemakers." The issue for them is not a casino in Florence - but the fact that it's an Indian casino, as evidenced by comments made at their meetings.

PACT has voiced its reasons against the casino. These are my reasons for it.

The casino would not only be good for tribal members but also for the state of Oregon. With our economy the way it is, why would anyone oppose something that would not only create hundreds of long-term but short-term jobs as well? Oregon has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. I would think people would be jumping at the chance to create jobs and stimulate the economy.

As far as saying that the casino will take away from local shops, that is utterly ridiculous. The casino will bring more tourists into Florence and will stimulate the economy. Since PACT does not want a casino, I wonder how much they care about Oregon's economy and its residents.
