'Reform' means 'eliminate'

Local and state Head Start officials are right to worry about the future of their program now that President Bush has announced plans to reform Head Start. In the Bush lexicon, "reform" generally means "cut" or "eliminate." That's why you have never heard the president announce plans to reform corporate welfare or reform the government contracting practices of top Republican corporate campaign contributors.

In the president's view, none of the programs enjoyed by his favored constituents requires reform - only those used by the poor and middle classes.

Think before backing Bush

I have a daughter serving in the U.S. Army who was recently reassigned after duty in Baghdad and a son who is currently serving in the Army in Iraq where, thanks to our shoot-from-the-lip president and his "bring-'em-on" dare, he is a prime target.

No one supports the troops more than I do. Having said that, I'd like to also say that the war in Iraq is one of the sorriest events in U.S. history. We have been misled mis·led

by a president who was appointed, not elected, and has seized the tragedy of Sept. 11 as an excuse to pursue his perilous policy of advancing his dubious, oil-drenched tactics that inevitably end up lining the pockets of the same corporate cronies who aided him in buying the presidency.

It is becoming apparent that the president is not above using deception and deceit Deceit

in pursuing his endeavors. There's mounting evidence that we were lied to. Call it faulty intelligence or deception, in the rush to fulfill his aims the president has not hesitated to forge forward without regard to the truth. Remember weapons of mass destruction Weapons that are capable of a high order of destruction and/or of being used in such a manner as to destroy large numbers of people. Weapons of mass destruction can be high explosives or nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological weapons, but exclude the means of transporting or , the alleged reason for going to war? It should be a monumental embarrassment to this administration that no such weapons have been found.

For the sake of our brave military people who put their lives on the line every day, as well as for your sake, think before you give your approval to a president who sends them off to war. Unfortunately, all a president has to do is wave the flag and say "God bless bless

Let industry into Oregon

If the governor of Oregon The Governor of Oregon is the top executive of the government of the U.S. state of Oregon. The title of governor was also applied to the office of Oregon's chief executive during the provisional and U.S. territorial governments.  had the guts to stand up to the protesters and environmentalists and allow some industry (besides gambling) to come into the state, there would be jobs for the people and money for the schools.

Wheat is planted, harvested then replanted as a crop. Trees are also a crop; for every tree that is harvested another must be planted. The cycle goes on.

Oregon doesn't need a sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. . The poor can't afford it. Oregon is nearly the poorest state in the nation.

A few years ago, the schools received most of their money from the sale of timber. Our people in Salem need to take charge and get the job done.

Egghead era is nearly over

So Gary Farbstein (letters, July 9) says my president, George W. Bush, is the dumbest U.S. president we have had, based upon how many words he uses compared to really smart folks, such as Bill Clinton. Well, Farbstein should realize that the days of the eggheads running America are just about over.

As a former U.S. Marine, I appreciated Bush's comment to "bring 'em on," as does most of the military. Farbstein, like a lot of cowardly liberals in our midst, can't understand that comment any more than they could understand Ronald Reagan's "make-my-day" statement several years ago. It's also helpful to remember that every time George W. Bush took off in his fighter, he risked his life for all of us, and that the Texas Air National Guard, like Oregon's, is one of the best fighter squadrons America has - having flown most of the missions over Iraq patrolling the no-fly zone no-fly zone
