Letters in the Editor's Mailbag.Byline: The Register-Guard Spooner has energy, vision As a senior citizen living in Florence, I am concerned about our community's inability to retain many of its brightest young people. Restricted employment and educational opportunities are making us an increasingly one-dimensional town. Rob Spooner, a candidate for the Lane Community College Board, shares this concern and is attempting to enhance the attractiveness of the community college to the students of Lane County. It is unfortunate that The Register-Guard editors have misinterpreted one of Spooner's most important positions (editorial, May 2). He has praised the college for preparing students for their last two years of university study and recommends that this fundamental role be expanded. To suggest that Spooner is unappreciative of other aspects of the college's mission is simply untrue. Rob Spooner probably does not resent being labeled an iconoclast iconoclast Surgery A surgical instrument used for blunt dissection, which may be used below the galea aponeurotica in preparation for scalp reduction-browlift in hair restoration. NEWLON Florence Holvey is a fighter If you want someone who not only understands the importance of education but realizes that the income earned at the end of the education should support your family, then you should vote for Paul Holvey for Zone 7 position on the Lane Community College Board. I have known and worked with Holvey for many years. His integrity and commitment for the working families of Lane County is unsurpassed. Down to earth and a fighter, Holvey will be there when we need him. Education is more than a degree, it's a job at the end of your journey. Time for reality, time for Holvey. Please join me in voting for Paul Holvey for the at-large Zone 7 seat on the LCC Board. RICK HENSON Springfield Get flag out of my face Well, I guess I was too preoccupied browsing my left-wing conspiracy-theorist Web sites and plotting the downfall of this great nation (that can do no wrong) to foresee the inevitable - dittoheads climbing to the top of this dung heap of a war to flap their star-spangled wings and crow, "The liberals were wrong! The liberals were wrong!" I'll leave most of the factual challenges for another letter, but I'll give one now: My tax dollars were used to kill and maim maim v. to inflict a serious bodily injury, including mutilation or any harm which limits the victim's ability to function physically. JENNIFER KNOWLTON Eugene Tax cut plan fits pattern Anyone disturbed by President Bush's call for more tax cuts after running up a projected deficit of $818 billion in just three years needs a history lesson. The tax-cut ploy has worked like a charm every time it has been used for the past 22 years, starting with President Ronald Reagan. Here's the formula: Start a war somewhere. In 1981, for instance, Russia was the first country to be dubbed "the Evil Empire" (World War III World War III (abbreviated WWIII), or the Third World War, is a term used to describe a hypothetical conflict on the scale of World War I and World War II, or even larger, such as a nuclear holocaust. was going to happen in Europe, don't you know), providing the perfect excuse for a massive military buildup that eventually throws the U.S. economy into a tailspin tail·spin n. 1. The rapid descent of an aircraft in a steep, spiral spin. 2. Informal A loss of emotional control sometimes resulting in emotional collapse. . Domestic spending had to be cut, and the only way to get the economy back on track was - you guessed it - a tax cut. In 1991, the first President Bush repeated the formula with his invasion of Iraq. Social programs have never recovered. Now here we are again, and it is no accident that after extreme military spending our economy is in ruins and social programs must be cut even further. The strategy is intentional. In the last 20 years, our government has purposely been engaged in shifting to a new economic model that calls for the complete transfer of all government functions to the private sector. Called supply-side, free-market or corporate capitalism Corporate capitalism is a form of capitalism where all or most of the means of production are owned by corporations (where individuals own a means of production collectively in tradeable shares as stockholders). Numerically most businesses in the U.S. , this new model has no value for human life, only for profit. Yes, some people in Oregon will die as a result of these cutbacks. And the response from members of the Washington millionaire's club? They couldn't care less. HELEN BURNHAM Eugene Johnson, Lioio bring new focus Dave Johnson Dave Johnson may refer to:
Elections are about deciding if we are better off because of the actions of officials in office - or if we would be better off electing someone new. From my perspective as a father of three district students and as a former board member, the choice is clear. We need better leadership. Last summer, two new board members were appointed and plunged the board into a series of secret executive session meetings to focus on their personal agendas. It is no surprise that the results are turmoil and little focus on the board's mission: educating our children. The Springfield School District had been envied in Oregon for being able to avoid devastating dev·as·tate tr.v. dev·as·tat·ed, dev·as·tat·ing, dev·as·tates 1. To lay waste; destroy. 2. To overwhelm; confound; stun: was devastated by the rude remark. budget cuts. Now our children will be paying for this board's turmoil for years. The district has announced plans to drastically cut teaching staff. We are left to wonder how much better off our children would be if the board had left a skilled administrative staff in place and focused on improving education. Fortunately, voters have two very solid choices in this year's election to refocus the board. Johnson will bring years of public finance experience to the board. Lioio will add a fresh perspective independent of the devastating group think now ravaging this board and our children's education. I urge voters to take back control of our kids' education by electing Dave Johnson and Bill Lioio to the Springfield School Board. TOM ATKINSON Springfield Cuts will hurt animals I would like to comment on Deanna Diehl's May 7 letter, "Animal agency merits support." If Lane County and the city of Eugene cut Lane County Animal Regulation Authority's budget effective July 1, an estimated 245 adoptable cats and 116 adoptable dogs will die instead of finding new homes through the Lane County Animal Regulation Authority's adoption programs. As Diehl mentioned, many public service calls will go unanswered - including those involving dangerous dogs, animal neglect and abuse and chronic barking dogs
If local residents agree that sacrificing the lives and welfare of innocent animals is not an acceptable way to balance the budgets, I would urge them to contact Eugene Mayor Jim Torrey, their city councilor coun·cil·or also coun·cil·lor n. A member of a council, as one convened to advise a governor. See Usage Note at council. coun and their county commissioner to voice opposition. Perhaps money can be found by eliminating special elections, consolidating them to yearly only, or by trimming city and county employees' travel and entertainment budgets by 10 percent to 25 percent. We and the college, however, are fortunate indeed to have Roger Hall currently chairing the Lane Community College Board. At a time like this, the college and community are best served by someone with Hall's experience and dedication on the board. In his 12 years of service, Hall has done his homework and learned a great deal about the community college and its mission and operations. He understands the need to keep the comprehensive nature of LCC and not allow it to be transformed by cuts to a junior college with principally college transfer credit programs. His leadership has always been important to the board, but that leadership has been essential in this last year as he, as chair, has steered the group through the difficult task of setting budget policy. We cannot afford to lose his knowledge, experience, commitment and leadership.
