As 2002 fades to black and posada po·sa·da

Although I spent most of the year in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

prior to replacing the London-bound Matthew Gower as editor of BUSINESS MEXICO, I have been struck by how much Mexico remains the same as I remember it from the days when the PRI PRI: see Institutional Revolutionary party.

 reigned supreme and unchallenged.

Yes I know, reader, that the man in Los Pinos Los Pinos is Mexico's official presidential residence, the home – for a six-year period – of the President of Mexico. Located inside the Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Park) in central Mexico City, it has been in use since 1934 when Gen.  wears cowboy boots rather than glasses, but financially speaking, the same fuel--whether it be oil, remittances or tourism--feeds the Mexican engine.

The devastation on Wall Street that I saw firsthand has trickled down to Mexico, and the Bolsa may finish the year off as much as 10%. But to judge the state of the nation's economy by flashing figures on an IPC (1) (InterProcess Communication) The exchange of data between one program and another either within the same computer or over a network. Volatility is a fundamental part of playing the Mexican game, whether it be a jumpy stock market or a roadblock by farmers on the superhighway to Acapulco, and the successful roll with the punches and implacably continue to look for opportunity in the face of adversity.

All of us working in Mexico realize this can be the most volatile of markets and the shakiest of terrain upon which to build. But what have we seen? An unrivaled skyscraper financed by Canadian interests rising boldly over Paseo de la Reforma Paseo de la Reforma (a Spanish-language name that roughly translates as "Promenade of the Reform") is a 12 km long grand avenue in Mexico City, Mexico. The name commemorates the liberal reforms of 19th century president Benito Juárez. . So the sense of promise is here, the sense of hope and faith in the intrinsic strength--some might call it corazon--that makes this country potentially such a great investment to those willing to take a chance.

I wish all of our readers good luck in their countless gambles this new year, whether it be investing in a broken-down apartment in the Centro Historico, filling one's portfolio with Mexican blue chips, or simply playing a nice-looking filly underneath weekend twilight at the Hipodromo de las Americas.

God bless and happy holidays,

Matthew Brayman
