Letter from the president.A strong volunteer leadership is essential to our future success. In the past, members chose among candidates for leadership in a competitive election. In the current and future elections, members vote for or against a single slate of candidates proposed by TAPPI's Nominating Committee A nominating committee is a group formed usually from inside the membership of an organization for the purpose of nominating candidates for office within the organization. In the past, when strong, competent candidates ran against each other, half the slate of active volunteers wound up disappointed after each election. Sometimes, unsuccessful candidates became less active in TAPPI or even dropped out of the organization. We wondered why we were inflicting this pain on our association and on those we most want to engage. Single slates are widely used in many other volunteer organizations. As I complete my presidency at the annual meeting in February, I will become Chair of the Nominating Committee.
