Lesbian mystique. (reader forum).

X2's character Mystique, played by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, has more relevance to gays than was touched on in your article ["X Woman," April 29]. In the comics, along with being birth mother birth mother or birthmother
n.
A biological mother.
to Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), she was a foster mother who helped raise Rogue (Anna Paquin)--with the help of her long-time older female partner, Destiny. (In the comics it's all but declared they had a lesbian relationship.)

And while your author may be too young to have experienced it, believe me, even in the X-Men's initial stories from the mid 1960s, the theme of them being good people treated as outcasts because of a special gift they were born with (but had to keep secret) resonated very strongly with at least one self-questioning young gay reader--me.
