LEOPOLD, Aldo Leopold, Aldo, 1886–1948, American ecologist, b. Burlington, Iowa. He was an advocate for a "land ethic," in which humans see themselves as part of a natural community. Udall gives voice to Leopold's unique vision of nature, wild things, the Earth and what we owe it as its stewards. This classic of conservationism needs the gruff gruff

 voice of Udall to de-sentimentalize Leopold's almost poetic descriptions of the first flowers of spring and to express his rugged appreciation of trout trout: see salmon.

Although the book was published over 50 years ago, Leopold's thoughts are just as relevant and even more pressing than when they were first written; the Earth is in a much more perilous state than what he prophesized from his little corner of the world on his farm in Wisconsin, filled with marsh and sand, trees and the wild things that kept him connected. He uses his description of cutting into a tree 130 years old to tell the history of the settlement of his land, personalizing the destruction of the land as well as its usefulness to those who have lived on it.
