Noun 1.
MALTIN'S MOVIE AND VIDEO GUIDE 1995 (Signet, 1580 pp.) is an incredible 25 years old, as fat and as title-filled as ever, and still an indispensable guide to the movies available on video and on television.

That first edition, back in 1969, listed 8,000 films alphabetically al·pha·bet·i·cal   also al·pha·bet·ic
adj.
1. Arranged in the customary order of the letters of a language.

2. Of, relating to, or expressed by an alphabet.
. The new one has more than 20,000 entries and includes 400 new ones as well as a couple of minor corrections from the last Guide. There are also updated indexes of stars and directors and details of film series.

The individual listings are incredibly complete, considering the mass of information assembled as·sem·ble
v. as·sem·bled, as·sem·bling, as·sem·bles

v.tr.
1. To bring or call together into a group or whole: assembled the jury.

2.
 by Maltin Malt´in

n. 1. (Physiol. Chem.) The fermentative principle of malt; malt diastase; also, a name given to various medicinal preparations made from or containing malt.
. Pictures are identified as to color or black-and-white, running times are provided and so are Maltin's ratings. Best of all, each picture comes with its own synopsis A summary; a brief statement, less than the whole.

A synopsis is a condensation of something—for example, a synopsis of a trial record.
and, of course, the director, cast, and the type of picture it is. What a job it must have been too put all this together, and Maltin and his editorial crew deserve a hatful of kudos for all that.

Be it professionals or just ordinary viewers, this Guide seems virtually indispensable. Oh, it starts with the 1975 Aaron Loves Angela, directed by Gordon Parks, and it ends with the 1979 Zulu Dawn, which is followed by a useful and comprehensive star index.
