Legislative Forum yields successful results: record attendance, quality educational sessions and dynamic speakers combine to provide a powerful push for advocacy.


With record attendance of more than 400 delegates descending upon Washington, D.C., this year's NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association
NRPA Natural Resources Protective Association (Staten Island, NY)
NRPA Niagara Regional Police Association (Canada)
NRPA National Rifle and Pistol Association
 National Legislative Forum for Parks and Recreation was sure to make a strong impact with legislators. Participants were treated to a renewed educational session format that included topics ranging from how to obtain grants and technical assistance, to keys to effective lobbying, to information about possible funding from the transportation bill.

In addition, keynote speaker Rep. James McGovern James McGovern is the name of:

  • James P McGovern, or Jim McGovern, current member of the United States House of Representatives
  • James McGovern, current United Kingdom Member of Parliament
 (D-Mass.) revved up the crowd with a rousing address about the Land and Water Conservation Fund The United States' Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is a Federal program that was established by Act of Congress in 1965. The Act designated that a portion of receipts from offshore oil and gas leases[1]  (LWCF LWCF Land and Water Conservation Fund

) and the state of spending for parks and recreation in Congress. He set the stage for participants to head to Capitol Hill to meet with legislators on the issues.

The focus of the Forum was for participants to meet with legislators on Capitol Hill and stress the importance of parks and recreation. Several delegations returned with positive news. After the day's meetings, legislators who have been proven supporters of NRPA's advocacy issues were also given Congressional Awards About the Award
The Congressional Award is the U.S. Congress' award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all 14- to 23-year-olds.
