Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2000 Octopus 4.0 Includes Application, Performance and Configuration Enhancements To Help Organizations Better Protect Business-Critical Data in Windows 2000 and Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. When deployed on Windows 2000 servers, Legato's Octopus 4.0 provides real-time data Real-time data denotes information that is delivered immediately after collection. There is no delay in the timeliness of the information provided. Some uses of this term confuse it with the term dynamic data. protection and high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue. so business managers have continuous access to data they need to make timely and knowledgeable business decisions. Legato Octopus 4.0 also includes several unique performance features that can improve the overall productivity of workers. Additionally, it includes new configuration features that enable IT departments to more easily install upgrades and maintain the system, which minimizes system downtime. &uot;Business-critical data is a valuable corporate asset and should be managed with that in mind,&uot; said Dan Kusnetzky, program director of operating environments and serverware research services at IDC. &uot;Legato's Octopus software allows companies having Windows NT-based IT infrastructures to develop an affordable disaster recovery program.&uot; In addition to the support for Windows 2000, Octopus 4.0 offers a new level of protection for Microsoft Cluster Server Clustering software from Microsoft for Windows NT/2000. It provides rudimentary load balancing and two-node failover, which allows a second server to take over if the first one fails. Cluster Server was formerly code named Wolfpack. (MSCS See Microsoft Cluster Server. ). Legato's Octopus further protects data within a MSCS environment by replicating the data from remote servers outside the cluster to other clusters or stand-alone systems for disaster recovery purposes. With version 4.0, customers can configure Octopus to be active on both nodes within a MSCS cluster. This allows any data from the shared disk within the MSCS environment to be protected. Ultimately, it provides users with continued access to their data even if the two-node cluster A two-node cluster is the minimal high-availability cluster that can be built. Should one node fail (for a hardware or software problem), the other must acquire the resources being previously managed by the failed node, in order to re-enable access to these resources. fails. &uot;Information that empowers today's e-businesses and Fortune 500 companies is increasingly found on Windows networks,&uot; said Jim Chappell, senior vice president, Legato Systems. &uot;Octopus is an integral part of Legato's vision of delivering Information Continuance to its customers, and we will persistently bring additional enhancements to the product over time to ensure it meets the increasing data protection and fault resilience requirements of Windows-based IT infrastructures.&uot; Legato's Octopus software provides data protection for Windows 2000 and Windows NT networks by replicating data from source systems to local and/or remote target systems, providing high availability for mission-critical data in the event the data is damaged or destroyed at the primary location. Octopus 4.0 includes key product enhancements that increase the speed by which data can be replicated. Other new features simplify configuration and ongoing administration of the Octopus product. These enhancements include: Performance Features: -- Streamlined replication process offers improved performance by eliminating disk writes during the normal replication process. Legato Octopus 4.0 instead captures updates to files on a source system, queues them to a shared memory (1) Using part of main memory to support a low-cost display circuit that does not have its own memory. See shared video memory. (2) The common memory in a symmetric multiprocessing system that is available to all CPUs. See SMP. 1. buffer then forwards the updates to the specified target system applying them directly to the corresponding file. -- Check-Sum Binary Compare To compare two sets of digital data in order to determine if they are 100% identical. Binary compares are commonly done and are the only guarantee that two files are the same, bit for bit. for Incremental Synchronization (1) See synchronous and synchronous transmission. (2) Ensuring that two sets of data are always the same. See data synchronization. (3) Keeping time-of-day clocks in two devices set to the same time. See NTP. determines which files have changed, extracts only those changes and copies them instead of copying the entire file during the incremental synchronization. -- Persistent Site List allows Octopus to retain a list of network sites even after the Octopus service has been stopped. The Site List displays the sites where Octopus is installed and the status of the Octopus service at each site. Configuration Features: -- Specification Dialog Box A movable window that is displayed on screen in response to the user selecting a menu option. It provides the current status and available options for a particular feature in the program. now allows users to select files to be replicated from a file tree view similar to that of Windows NT Explorer. The dialog box has been separated into four streamlined windows to improve ease-of-use: Global Excludes, Mirror Files, Mirror Shares, and Mirror DFS (Distributed File System) An enhancement to Windows NT/2000 and 95/98 that allows files scattered across multiple servers to be treated as a single group. With Dfs, a network administrator can build a hierarchical file system that spans the organization's LANs and Shares. -- Specification Wizard is now the default for configuring specifications. The Wizard steps users through the dialog box for initial setup of a specification. This feature can be disabled via the Client Options Dialog box. -- Synchronization Cancel option allows a synchronization already in progress to be stopped without having to delete the data directory.
