couldn't help but feel that the past had finally caught up with them. "I would like to give every one of those couples a little kiss," Sullivan says.

Sullivan, 62, and Adams, 57, were one of six same-sex couples to receive a marriage license in Boulder County, Colo., in 1975 when that county briefly issued the nation's first such licenses, and their marriage has never been invalidated. They were also among the first to wage a public fight over the issue, at a time when many gays and lesbians rejected marriage as a heterosexist institution. The couple held press conferences, went on TV, took legal action, and unlike the same-sex couples of today, they did it with little help.

"There were a lot of people we expected support from, but we didn't get it," Adams says.

Adams and Sullivan met in 1971 at the now-defunct Closet Bar in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and moved into an apartment together a few months later. So the couple made what was at the time a bold decision: Go public and fight. Then Adams read an article in a then-current issue of The Advocate [see page 25] that said a county clerk The term "county clerk" has been commonly applied, in several English-speaking countries, to an official of a county government. A high-profile 10-year court battle ensued. But in 1985, Anthony Kennedy, then a federal judge in the ninth U.S. circuit (now a U.S. Supreme Court justice), ruled against them, and Sullivan was ordered to leave. They traveled through Europe and then sneaked back into the United States, where Sullivan, a writer, has lived illegally with Adams, who works at a law firm, ever since. Their days of public protest now over, they quietly share an apartment with their two dogs in an undisclosed location.
