, causing a meltdown of its core. Subsequent explosions exposed local residents to radiation equivalent to 100 times the immediate fallout from the Hiroshima bomb. Fifteen years later, this invisible menace is still present. The government of Ukraine has erected a 30-kilometer exclusion zone A zone established by a sanctioning body to prohibit specific activities in a specific geographic area. The purpose may be to persuade nations or groups to modify their behavior to meet the desires of the sanctioning body or face continued imposition of sanctions, or use or threat of  around the power plant, and within that area, an even more restricted 10-kilometer ring. Entering these areas can be difficult, but john Darwell's book Legacy allows the viewer to safely venture into this deserted land.

Thirty-five color images take one from the edge of a 30K checkpoint well into Pripyat, a city just kilometers from the power plant. As part of the itinerary, Darwell visits some of the small villages forcibly evacuated after the accident. In one photograph, Darwell surveys a cityscape (company) CityScape - A re-seller of Internet connections to the PIPEX backbone.

of abandoned apartment buildings where the Chernobyl Power Plant looms hazily in the distance. The clarity of thousands of empty windows suggest the missing families no longer inhabiting Pripyat. Indeed, throughout the book the invisible presence of the displaced parallels that of the radiation that has caused the evacuation.

One abandoned village, Opachichi, has subsequently been illegally re-inhabited by some former residents. While these images attempt to give a view of how life looked before the accident, what is most noticeable is the absence of a younger generation. The occupants are comprised of those for whom any physical consequences of the remaining radiation are subordinate to finishing out their lives in their homes.

When producing a documentation of an area, often the most difficult decision is how much to include of oneself in the imagery--the gamut can stretch from a distant, seemingly straightforward documentary to a close-up and personal travelogue. Legacy presents a very serious and tragic situation with a combination of text and images ranging from ambivalent pictures of security checkpoints to overly sentimental ones of an abandoned kindergarten in Pripyat. There is a long history of similar projects, perhaps most notably Minamata, W. Eugene and Aileen Smith's documentary of industrial mercury poisoning mercury poisoning, tissue damage resulting from exposure to more than trace amounts of the element mercury or its compounds. Elemental mercury (the silver liquid familiar from thermometers) is the most common occupational source.  in the Japanese village of the same name. Minamata was a large and involved project that Smith and his wife Aileen undertook, and while Legacy seems unsure of its purpose the viewer was left with little doubt as to Smith's position on his subject.

In this regard Legacy appears unresolved. In terms of substance and scope it serves to function more as a visual outline than a visual essay (though it certainly suggests what might evolve into a much greater body of work). Darwell's photographs ultimately offer a thoughtful and skilled presentation of a series of polarities: the visible effects of the invisible radiation; the simultaneous presence and absence of humanity; the past and the future of the Chernobyl area. It will be thousands of years before the decaying isotopes will allow safe habitation HABITATION, civil law.
