OMG - Object Management Group
(TM)) will meet in Boston, MA, USA from September 8-12, 2003 at a meeting sponsored by Compuware Corporation. Members will work the organization's technology adoption process, attend tutorials, and view demonstrations of products implementing OMG specifications. The Boston meeting will feature the following four Information Days; Model Integrated Computing and Embedded Systems Focus Days, a Financial Services Forum The Financial Services Forum is a non-partisan financial and economic policy organization comprised of the CEOs of 20 of the largest and most diversified financial services institutions doing business in the United States. , a Space Information Day, and a Software Process Engineering Metamodel (SPEM SPEM Software Process Engineering Metamodel (OMG specification)
SPEM Semi-Spectral Primitive Equation Model
) Information Day. In addition, OMG's new Legacy Transformation Working Group will work on a draft Request for Proposals for legacy software transformation and design recovery, soliciting the industry's first standards in this increasingly important area of software engineering.

Other activity to note is a planned meeting between the Rule Markup Initiative (RMI (Remote Method Invocation) A standard from Sun for distributed objects written in Java. RMI is a remote procedure call (RPC), which allows Java objects (software components) stored in the network to be run remotely. ) and the OMG Business Rules SIG. RMI's goal is to provide an integrated rule-markup language approach for business rules and is investigating working with OMG on standardization of production rules and adoption of the Meta Object Facility(TM) (MOF(TM)) standard in its work. The formation of a joint Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Systems (ManTIS) and Real-time Embedded and Special Systems (RTESS RTESS Real Time Embedded and Specialized System ) Control Systems Working Group will kick off joint work on specifications related to equipment control.

New Infrastructure and Domain Specifications

The following specifications may be recommended for adoption votes at the Boston Technical Meeting:

-- Chemical Structure & Access Representation (Life Sciences

Research)

-- Two related to MOF model versioning and transformations

-- Business Process Runtime Interfaces (MDA (1) (Monochrome Display Adapter) The first IBM PC monochrome video display standard for text. Due to its lack of graphics, MDA cards were often replaced with Hercules cards, which provided both text and graphics. See PC display modes and Hercules Graphics.  and web services

Information Days

A Financial Forum will explore approaches to managing sensitive financial data. Taking place on Monday, September 8th, the one-day event will cover the OMG RFP (Request For Proposal) A document that invites a vendor to submit a bid for hardware, software and/or services. It may provide a general or very detailed specification of the system.

2.
for Sensitive Data Management, which calls for techniques for modeling Sensitive Data, enabling Secure Transactions and securing management of Sensitive Data, among other related topics. For more information, visit http://www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/financial_services_forum.htm.

The Software Process Engineering Metamodel (SPEM), a new specification from the OMG, defines a UML-based metamodel which then may be used to define any software development process. Software process engineering has long been a difficult task, due in part to the lack of standards and methodologies, as well as the innate complexity and dynamic nature of software development endeavors. The SPEM Information Day, taking place on Tuesday, September 9th, will introduce the standard, and include presentations and discussions on related topics.

The Model Integrated Computing and Embedded Systems Focus Days on Monday and Tuesday will feature presentations from DARPA/IXO, MITRE, Boeing, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, General Dynamics, Vanderbilt University and the University of Austria. For more information, visit http://www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/MIC_Emb_day.pdf.

A Space Information Day will take place on Wednesday, September 10th. The day will feature a tutorial and lessons learned regarding XML Telemetric and Command Exchange XTCE (for XML Telemetric and Command Exchange) XTCE home is an XML based exchange format for spacecraft telemetry and command meta-data. Using XTCE the format and content of a space systems command and telemetry links can be readily exchanged between spacecraft operators and  (XTCE XTCE XML Telemetric and Command Exchange ) as well as discussions on Space standardization requirements and opportunities with presentations from industry experts. Integrate 2003, September 9-10th

Co-located with the Technical Meeting is the third event in a new series from OMG, Integrate 2003. The conference will focus on the business and technical aspects of application integration using many different infrastructure standards - OMG's own and other key industry standards including Web Services, XML/SOAP, C#/.Net, Java, CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global (R), and more.

Product Demonstrations

A technology demonstration area, which will coincide with the Integrate 2003 Conference, will feature demonstrations of OMG-compliant technology from over 30 vendors.

About The OMG

With well-established standards covering software from design and development, through deployment and maintenance, and extending to evolution to future platforms, the Object Management Group (OMG) supports a full-lifecycle approach to enterprise integration which maximizes ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot). , the key to successful IT. OMG's standards cover multiple operating systems, programming languages, middleware and networking infrastructures, and software development environments. OMG's Modeling standards, the basis for the MDA, include the Unified Modeling Language See UML.
