Having had much more experience with the Democrats that control the legislature here, I know Republicans were very wary of the fact that the bill expanded the grasp of the legislature by allowing the legislators to bypass the elected members of the Alabama School Board to identify the approved textbook and publisher for this course. With the powerful education lobby in this state, we do not want to allow the legislature to begin dictating which textbooks will be used in our classrooms. The simple truth is that students in Alabama schools can already take Bible literacy courses similar to the one identified in this bill and can use a variety of textbooks, including the one mandated in this bill.
