Leaving the fold.

Thank you so much for the article by Amy Sullivan ("When Would Jesus Bolt?" April). You give hope to those of us who are Biblical Christians and who have long held that our faith calls us to what the world often calls progressive politics. The Bible recognizes that the world's lust Lust

Great article. I have long resented the equation of morality, spirituality, and religion with the Christian right The term "Christian Right" is used by scholars and journalists, to refer to a spectrum of right-wing Christian political and social movements and organizations characterized by their strong support of conservative social and political values. . There are lots of us out there who are moral and spiritual in other religious traditions who care about human and environmental needs and would be pleased to work with anyone who is willing to work towards those agendas in good faith. It would be wonderful to see some evangelicals living up to a broader perspective of faith.

Your article gives me hope. I am a Republican who has lost faith in this administration and the Republican Party. They have become "the party of greed," and I have felt for some time that they were using religion for their agenda and had little compassion for anything but big business and corporations. I am also concerned about the environment and George Bush's stance on global warming global warming, the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution. . Thumbs-up to Randy Brinson!

Would Ms. Sullivan please join the Republican Party and leave the Democrats alone? One religious nut party is enough, don't you think? We don't need two.

You missed the real point in explaining why the Alabama GOP did not support the Bible Literacy Bill in the Alabama Legislature The Alabama Legislature is the legislative branch of the state government of Alabama. It is a bicameral body composed of the Alabama House of Representatives, with 105 members, and the Alabama Senate, with 35 members. . Having had much more experience with the Democrats that control the legislature here, I know Republicans were very wary of the fact that the bill expanded the grasp of the legislature by allowing the legislators to bypass the elected members of the Alabama School Board to identify the approved textbook and publisher for this course. With the powerful education lobby in this state, we do not want to allow the legislature to begin dictating which textbooks will be used in our classrooms.

The simple truth is that students in Alabama schools can already take Bible literacy courses similar to the one identified in this bill and can use a variety of textbooks, including the one mandated in this bill. The bill, as written, served no useful purpose except to allow Alabama Democrats to pander to To appeal to (base emotions or less noble desires), so as to achieve one's purpose; to exploit (base emotions, such as lust, prejudice, or hate).

I am a Christian who believes that we are stewards of all the earth and everything and everyone on it at all times. What big business sees as their rights over the rest of the world is cause for dismay and consternation.

Outstanding piece! The only problem I have is with the tide. Jesus would not need to revolt from the Republican Party; he never would have been a part of it in the first place. "By their fruit shall you know them" ... Matthew 7:16 in the gospel according to according to
