Leave it better: from jail to trail: a state museum turns a former prison site into a natural park setting.

Solution:

Community Impact:

The park serves as a link in an exemplary system of greenway trails and provides direct access to the museum and park from nearby Meredith College Since 2000, Meredith College has hosted Governor's School East each summer. History

. Dan Gottlieb, the museum's deputy director for planning, says that the project will benefit people from across the Raleigh area. "Beautiful and well-managed urban parks appeal to and attract nearly every segment of a community," Gottlieb said. "With its 164-acre site, the NCMA has an unparalleled opportunity to create a community gathering place, a more publicly accessible asset for the region, and the state of North Carolina." More than 1,000 K-12 students participated in art and environmental education programs in the past fiscal year and hikers have the experience of encountering a sculpture that recycles bricks from the prison and artist-designed benches made from the cell bars.
