Learn the Heimlich maneuver.

You can learn the Heimlich maneuver! Ask your scout leader or teacher to invite an instructor to teach it to you. After you learn this maneuver, use these pictures as a reminder. This is how it is performed on children over the age of one year.

TO SAVE A PERSON WHO IS CHOKING:

1. A person who is choking cannot breathe or speak. She may begin to turn blue and will probably reach for her throat. Try to get an adult's help and tell someone to call 911 or the emergency number for your area. Then begin the Heimlich maneuver as shown. (Note: If the choking person is coughing, stand back and watch closely. If the person can no longer breathe, call 911 and begin the Heimlich maneuver.)

2. Make a fist like this.

3. Reach around from behind the person. Place your fist against their belly just above the bellybutton and below the rib cage.

4. Cover the fist with your other hand.

5. Press inward and upward.

PRACTICE THIS STEP ON A DOLL. NEVER PRACTICE THIS STEP ON ANOTHER PERSON-IT MAY CAUSE INJURY.

6. After one or two presses, the object should come flying out of the victim's mouth. If it doesn't, try again and again. Don't give up. Shout for help if an adult has not already arrived.
