When dancers with trembling fans made of fuchsia-colored feathers glided across the City Center stage as though borne on a river of air, they set the tone for Career Transitions For Dancers' annual fund-raiser. The Oct. 23 gala, dubbed "One World," showcased dance traditions from countries that included India, Brazil, Ireland, Japan, and China, as well as homages to ethnic traditions performed by dancers from American Ballet Theatre American Ballet Theatre, one of the foremost international dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded in 1937 as the Mordkin Ballet and reorganized as the Ballet Theatre in 1940 under the direction of Lucia Chase and Rich Pleasant. , San Francisco Ballet San Francisco Ballet, or SFB, is a San Francisco, USA based ballet company, founded in 1933 as part of San Francisco Opera Ballet. The company is currently based in the War Memorial Opera House, where it is directed by Helgi Tomasson. , the Joffrey Ballet Joffrey Ballet, one of the major American dance companies. It was founded in New York City in 1954 by the dancer-choreographer Robert Joffrey. From 1956 to 1964 it made yearly tours of the United States. , and Luna Negra Dance Theater The German Tanztheater ("dance theatre") grew out of German expressionist dance. Its most influential performers are Pina Bausch and Susanne Linke. . Other highlights included a charming and sensual Latin-flavored debut by the youthful Ballet de Monterrey, and moving solos by tapper Noah Racey and hip hop artist Mr. Wriggles.
