JS From the KLIATT review of the book, January 2004: "It is February 29th and Josie Taylor is turning 16 but having her 'fourth' birthday ... Josie tells the story of her birthday in a series of first-person chapters, from the time she gets up in the morning to 11:59 that night. However, she's not the only one who gets to speak. Mass adds quite a twist to an otherwise straightforward tale by pairing each of Josie's chapters with another told from the various perspectives of all the people around her. Readers get to see beyond Josie's point of view and find out the motivations and inner thoughts of the people she interacts with throughout her birthday ... Mass's teenaged ensemble deals with sadness, insecurity Insecurity Inseparability (See FRIENDSHIP.) Insolence (See ARROGANCE.) Hamlet introspective, vacillating Prince of Denmark. [Br. Gibson and Parker capture the voices of 16-yearold Josie and her friends in this light, fun reading. The inflections from one voice to another are easily discernable and especially important to identify because Josie has an assorted group of friends plus an older brother and her parents. The timing and tone help all the characters come to life. These readers skillfully skill·ful adj. 1. Possessing or exercising skill; expert. See Synonyms at proficient. 2.
