The league suspended nine AquaSox and eight Emeralds for three games apiece. The suspended Emeralds are pitchers Aaron Coonrod, Eddie Bonine, Clark Girardeau, catchers Carlin and Matt Lauderdale, outfielders Jordan Pickens and Ruben Mora MORA, In civil law. Trouble between the two teams began in Tuesday's series opener after Carlin took offense when Everett shortstop Oswaldo Navarro Oswaldo Ramses Navarro [nah-vahr-o] (born October 2, 1984 in Villa de Cura, Venezuela) is a shortstop who plays for the Seattle Mariners organization. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela on August 12, 2001.  bunted with his team trailing 9-2 in the sixth inning.

"That's something you don't do, when you are down or up by a lot, don't bunt," Carlin said. "I said to him, `Swing the bat,' and he said something back to me. That's how it got started."

Carlin was hit by a pitch later in the game, and then was hit again the next day. One of those two beanings left an imprint of the baseball stitching on his arm.

Eugene retaliated in the series finale when reliever James Darby hit Navarro in the bottom of the eighth inning with Everett leading 6-0. As far as the Ems were concerned, both teams were even.

"Definitely it was even, then they came back and hit Lauderdale, and I knew he was going to the mound," Carlin said.

Lauderdale was beaned by pitcher Brian Rose Brian Rose can refer to

with two outs in the ninth inning. Lauderdale charged the mound, and a wild brawl ensued that forced the game to be called before the final out.

Carlin said he was the first Emerald to leave the dugout and headed straight for Navarro. The two exchanged blows before Carlin was tackled by another Everett player.

Carlin was then kicked in the head, but despite the scrapes, he did not second-guess his actions or those of his teammates.

"There's a code, certain things in baseball you do and don't do, and I don't think (Everett) played the game the right way," Carlin said. "I said something about it, they started mouthing off, and we'll stand behind what we think and back it up."

Everett manager Pedro Grifol hinted that the brawl had been building since the AquaSox visited Civic Stadium earlier this month, but Eugene manager Roy Howell Roy Lee Howell (December 18, 1953 in Lompoc, California), is a former professional baseball player who played third base in the Major Leagues from 1974-1984. He would play for the Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Milwaukee Brewers.  disagreed with his counterpart.

where that came from," Howell said. "The only thing that happened here is we beat them three straight. I don't know why we could be hooting about anything. If you beat somebody, keep your mouth shut and come out and play the next day."

Like Carlin, Howell said he also thought the teams were even after Navarro was hit, but added that he wasn't surprised that Everett retaliated in the ninth.

"I've been around too long to be surprised," he said. "I can't be inside these kids' head to know what they are thinking, when to protect a teammate and when not to."

The Ems and AquaSox do not play each other again this season, but Carlin hinted that the memories of Thursday's fight could linger.

"We're not feuding with them, but we won't forget Navarro," Carlin said. "That's for sure. That's something that will follow him for a while. We are not out to injure the guy, but he's the one who talks and then runs. If you have stuff to say, stay there and back it up."

None of the suspended players sat out Friday's 12-4 win over Boise, but Howell said some of the suspensions could begin with tonight's game.

Howell said he planned to talk to each suspended player, and the Ems could decide to appeal some of the suspensions.

"I was a little busy and didn't get to see what was going on all over the field," Howell said of Thursday's brawl. "I want to talk to the players and then talk to the league office to see if everything jells. If their list and mine are the same, then everything is OK. If not, then we have to talk about it."

Not all the suspensions will be served at the same time; Howell must sit two position players and one pitcher for each game. Each suspended player must miss three games, and each starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game

That's not great news for a team in a pennant Pennant

A continuation pattern in technical analysis formed when there is a large movement in a stock, the flagpole, followed by a consolidation period with converging trendlines, the pennant, followed by a breakout movement in the same direction as the initial large movement, the
race, but Carlin said the fight could have some benefits.

"I think it brought the team closer together," Carlin said.

Added Howell: "I think both our club and their club, there wouldn't have been a fight if either club was not close or competitive. The aspect of this bonding a team, I think we are already there."
