Silverstein at its annual fall reception on December 5, 2006, as a first step in its green building initiative.

Silverstein is being recognized for his groundbreaking efforts in creating New York's first "green" office tower at 7 World Trade Center (WTC WTC World Trade Center, see there ).

The event, "Celebrating a Greener Skyline," will take place at the new building.

Silverstein's new, striking 52-story, $700-million building replaces the former 7 WTC structure, which collapsed on 9/11.

The rise of this spectacular "green" skyscraper is emblematic of a new era in which business leaders, architects, developers, and construction managers are using eco-technology, renewable resources and innovative design to produce environmentally responsible buildings and provide healthier work places.

Silverstein's 7 WTC serves as the gateway to the World Trade Center site and represents a city that is dedicated to revitalizing and restoring the health and spirit of Lower Manhattan. "NYLCV is delighted to honor and support Mr. Silverstein whose vision, strong leadership and prudent planning for 7 World Trade Center resulted in a spectacular skyscraper that sets the new standard for 'green' building," said Marcia Bystryn, executive director of the New York League of Conservation Voters.

"We are pleased to present Mr. Silverstein with NYLCV's very first Green Buildings Vision Award, and we hope that many others will follow his lead and begin incorporating environmental and energy-saving measures in all developments."

In May 2006, 7 WTC opened its doors to the public and is the very first building with this address to be rebuilt.

Owner and developer, Larry A. Silverstein, president of Silverstein Properties, Inc., a Manhattan-based real estate investment and development firm, was committed to ensuring that this extraordinary new skyscraper be rebuilt according to the highest levels of green building standards.

In doing so, Mr. Silverstein worked diligently with the U.S. Green Building Council, a coalition that established the LEED system, to attain an impressive rating of GOLD.

The LEED system grades buildings in areas such as energy and water consumption, indoor air quality Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. The IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide, radon), allergens, or any mass or energy stressor  and use of renewable materials. It is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.
