(*)The "Total Top 200 Groups" includes the college Retirement Equities
Fund (CREF) net premiums written, whereas the "Total Life/Health
Industry" does not. CREF has been included in the ranking study because
of its industry significance, even though it files a different statutory
statement than the rest of the entities in this study. Since the amount
of double counting between TIAA and CREF is not available, a combined
group figure could not be shown. Hence, the top 200 is somewhat
overstated and the Total Industry is somewhat understated--by some
fraction of the CREF amount.
