DES is a division of' Denison Mines Limited, a company that operated the largest underground uranium mine in the Western Hemisphere. 'Over the past nine years, this dedicated team acquired valuable knowledge and experience managing the decommissioning of the Denison, Canmet and Stan rock mining properties. This was one of the largest mine decommissioning projects' of its kind with costs' in excess of $50 million.

Elements of the project included: hazardous material abatement, disposal of assets, construction of till core dams, demolition, shaft capping, tailings, relocation and site landscaping.

In 1997, the key people involved in the decommissioning of these properties formed the DES team. Decommissioning at Denison started in 1992 and was completed in 1998.

During the operating life of the mine, and beyond; throughout the decommissioning and closure periods,, Denison's employees, now represented by DES, have performed the treatment. and monitoring functions for these sites under the regulations of both federal and provincial agencies.

While their work at their own facilities has been a mater of pride for years, they are now seeking to expand services available to other mining firms to encompass the full, range of decommissioning activities including long-term care and maintenance.

To this end, they recently bid and were awarded the long-term care and maintenance of Rio Algom's five treat ment facilities including all sampling and reporting. This project validates their approach in answering the client's needs with practical economical solutions that are proven work.

They have become a leading force in the safe and efficient implementation of closure plans. DES has an excellent safety record. Their health and safety training programs include NORCAT NORCAT Northern Centre for Advanced Technology Inc. (mineral mining R&D organization) , First Aid, WHMIS WHMIS Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System  and Asbestos training for each' of their employees. To maintain excellence in mine decommissioning, the company became ISO (1) See ISO speed.

Knowledge of mine hazards, environmental issues, current regulatory standards and contract administration gives them a unique perspective on the best programs available for your project. In their brief history they have completed projects for the following clients:

Algoma Steel Inc. (ASI ASI,

They also perform an annual inspection of the fence and monitor the progress of mine flooding for ASI.
