Lead out.
Lead Out: Members of Congress sent a letter to the chief executive
of Mattel Inc. accusing the company of not keeping its promise to
prevent lead-tainted toys from getting into children's hands. The
letter came after the lawmakers said they were troubled by the El
Segundo company's decision against a nationwide recall of a toy
medical kit sold under the Fisher-Price brand that contained hazardous
amounts of lead. Lawmakers are considering a law to limit lead in toys.
Mattel said that its tests of the toy found higher-than-anticipated
levels of lead, but claimed the toy met American and European standards.
Also, Mattel reported fourth quarter net income of $329 million, up 15
percent from the same period a year earlier. Sales for the El
Segundo-based company rose 3.8 percent to $2.19 billion.
