Lazy software--the view from Aberdeen Group. (Data News and Products).

The Internet places a new set of demands on database technology to which relational vendors have yet to respond. Their flagship products A primary product of a company, which is typically why the company was founded and/or what made it well known. For example, MS-DOS, Windows and the Microsoft Office suite have been flagship products of Microsoft. CorelDRAW is a flagship product of Corel Corporation.  were developed before the advent of the client/server and the Internet and have become feature rich to the point of redundancy. By contrast, the Internet demands compact, lightweight technologies developed using Java that can function equally well on PCs, servers, network computers and the new generation of pervasive computing Refers to the use of computers in everyday life, including PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices. It also refers to computers contained in commonplace objects such as cars and appliances and implies that people are unaware of their presence.  devices that is now emerging. One major vendor's Internet strategy requires companies to store their databases on large, centralised Adj. 1. centralised - drawn toward a center or brought under the control of a central authority; "centralized control of emergency relief efforts"; "centralized government"
centralized
data servers, an approach which is at odds with the distributed nature of the Internet This defensive strategy is shaped more by the limitations of technology than the needs of customers and highlights the relational model's inability to respond to the demands of the Internet By contrast, the new associative model of data The associative model of data is an alternative data model for database systems. Other data models, such as the relational model and the object data model, are record-based. These models involve encompassing attributes about a thing, such as a car, in a record structure.  builds on a body of academic research including triple stores, semantic networks (data) semantic network - A graph consisting of nodes that represent physical or conceptual objects and arcs that describe the relationship between the nodes, resulting in something like a data flow diagram. , binary -relational techniques and the entity relationship model. To this several important and unique concepts have been added. The associative model sees information the same way as our brains: as things and associations between them These associations are expressed through the simple subject-verb-object syntax of an English sentence--hence the name of the product, Sentences.

Also, unlike their relational counterparts, associative databases don't need to be physically reorganised Adj. 1. reorganised - organized again; "a reorganized business"
reorganized

organized - formed into a structured or coherent whole
as the structure of data within them changes. Thus, for the first time programs are truly reusable and sophisticated database applications can be developed and deployed in days instead of months..

The Aberdeen Group Aberdeen Group is a provider of business-related research services. It has its headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts and belongs to the Harte-Hanks group. The Aberdeen Group also reviewed Lazy Software's latest product offering, LazyView.

LazyView uses the unique capabilities of its associative architecture to present data drawn simultaneously in real time from multiple, disparate relational databases such as Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server An earlier relational DBMS from Sybase and from Microsoft. Sybase introduced SQL Server in 1988 for various Unix versions. In that same year, with help from IBM, Sybase created an OS/2 version that Microsoft licensed and branded as Microsoft SQL Server. .

Data from target databases is aggregated to combine similar types of data and to resolve semantic conflicts, and may be referenced, searched and queried via Sentences.
