) has compiled a list of "Principles for Lay Initiative," which it hopes to release as a paper in 2000.

The nine principles cover the role of the laity, laity's mission, and social change, among other topics. They stress the holiness of work and the importance of encountering God and living the gospel in everyday life.

The 22-year-old Chicago-based NCL hopes the principles will be endorsed by Catholic leaders and become a rallying point Noun 1. rallying point - a point or principle on which scattered or opposing groups can come together
point - a brief version of the essential meaning of something; "get to the point"; "he missed the point of the joke"; "life has lost its point"
 for groups and individuals who believe in them.

"The goal is to form a national network of institutions that are trying to live by these principles, which really are the principles of Vatican II Noun 1. Vatican II - the Vatican Council in 1962-1965 that abandoned the universal Latin liturgy and acknowledged ecumenism and made other reforms
