The Eldridge Street Project, a not-for-profit cultural organization, has undertaken a massive restoration of the Eldridge Street Synagogue and the creation of a multi-faceted heritage center on site. The synagogue, which was completed over 115 years ago and was once one of the busiest synagogues on the Lower East Side, closed the sanctuary in the 1950's due to dwindling dwin·dle

To date, almost $9 million dollars has been raised towards the restoration through regular fund raising efforts, ongoing requests and generous donations from city, state and federal agencies.
