"Becoming a head coach is something I have looked forward to my entire career," Lawson said in a statement released on the Kent State Web site.

Lawson did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Lawson spent six years at Oregon, serving most recently as recruiting coordinator and decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events.  coach. Last month, new Oregon coach Vin Lananna designated Lawson as the director of track and field operations and men's recruiting coordinator, but he was assigned no specific coaching duties at that time.

Earlier in the week, assistant coach Rock Light turned down the chance to stay at Oregon for the coming year, accepting the position of vaults and horizontal jumps coach at Texas Tech.

Oregon is expected to conduct a national search for an assistant coach to fill Light's position, and also for a director of operations.

"We will take our time and pick the very best candidate we can find," Lananna said, adding that the events the new coach would oversee remain undetermined.

Lananna said Lawson "has done a marvelous job at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon.
