9980-850421-9; 405 pages. A detailed and well researched account of the involvement of Marist Brothers, French, Australian and Melanesian, in this region, particularly from 1938 to the present. The mission stations and schools were largely the responsibility of Marist provinces based in Sydney and Melbourne. Lawrence McCane, an Australian Marist Brother, was a teacher and administrator in Papua New Guinea from 1997 to 2003. His account is supported by clear maps, numerous photographs and an ample index. The book should be of particular interest and value to Marist Brothers and other religious congregations who have laboured in Melanesia, and to their ex-students, many of whom now reside in Australia.
