Associations typically use e-mail lists in three ways:

1. One-way distribution. Provide up-to-date information by sending announcements, newsletters, and press releases.

2. Discussion lists. Provide forums for members with common interests.

3. Database-generated lists. Create personalized messages using member information stored in databases.

ASAE now has a sponsored program to help you with all three. Through L-Soft, Landover, Maryland, ASAE members can effectively manage their e-mail lists using Listserv software. The company will even host your association's e-mail lists on its servers.

Gabriel Goldberg is outreach director for the all-volunteer-run Capital PC User Group, Brookeville, Maryland, a 1,000-member virtual nonprofit training organization. CPCUG uses L-Soft's Listserv program for dozens of mailing lists reaching thousands of subscribers. "Our organization could barely operate without the lists," says Goldberg. "Things happen too fast to keep people updated by postal mailings. Our discussion lists provide continuity and a sense of community for people who meet only occasionally or who in fact may never meet face to face."
