Latin license. As an Eastern Catholic priest, I am always happy to see articles giving good information about the Eastern churches, and I thank you for including one by Vincent Gragnani in your February February: see month. issue ("West meets East"). One correction that needs to be made is that the Catholic Church is a communion communion: see Eucharist; Lord's Supper. of 22 churches, not 23. I was pleased to find that Gragnani rose above the mindset mind·set or mind-set n. 1. A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations. 2. An inclination or a habit. prevalent in the Latin Church Latin Church n. The Roman Catholic Church. , which uses the word "Catholic" to refer most often to "Latin Catholic." A glaring glar·ing adj. 1. Shining intensely and blindingly: the glaring noonday sun. 2. Tastelessly showy or bright; garish. 3. example of this mindset held even by those close to the center of the Latin Church is the title of the book of laws for the Western church: Code of Canons of the Catholic Church. Despite the title, it is a book of laws only for the Latin Church. The title of the book of laws for the equally Catholic Eastern Churches is Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. It does not even contain the word "Catholic." Until this mindset is changed, especially at the top, all the rhetoric about equality remains just talk. Father Peter Lickman Miami, Fla. |
