The latest versions of Sidewinder and BorderWare optimize the firewalls' ability to deliver flexible, secure, and interoperable computing environments for organizations ranging from smaller businesses to multinational companies that deploy Internet and intranet strategies to conduct business with remote offices and customers around the globe.

"Our customers need security solutions that will allay fears they may have about deploying Internet and Intranet solutions on a global basis. In order to do this, they need specialized products that work equally well alone or together," said Brett Nelson Brett Nelson is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. Nelson was born in 1969 and currently lives in Boise, Idaho. In high school, Nelson played in a band called Farm Days, along with Doug Martsch and Andy Capps. , product marketing manager for Secure Computing's firewall division.

"Sidewinder and BorderWare firewalls are designed to operate together or independently in a wide variety of different enterprise-wide computing environments. This flexibility and interoperability is revolutionary in our industry."

Sidewinder and BorderWare Environments

Sidewinder and BorderWare can work seamlessly together in an environment where a company requires multiple firewalls to protect sub-networks and secure communications with remote offices. Both BorderWare 4.1 and Sidewinder 3.1 are application-level gateway firewalls, offering the highest level of security for primary connections to the Internet and for internal Intranets.

The two firewalls can establish a trusted communications link through a secure VPN tunnel, securing connections to remote offices. BorderWare and Sidewinder support SmartFilter URL filtering to enhance productivity across the enterprise, and both firewalls incorporate encrypted remote management capabilities.

Though both firewalls offer a similarly high level of protection, one product may be more appropriate in certain environments. The BorderWare Firewall Server is the only firewall available today that provides a full suite of embedded servers, making it a complete, cost-effective solution for larger corporations with multiple internal departments as well as smaller organizations that require secure access to the Internet.

Moreover, BorderWare's Multiple Address Translation (MAT) provides the ability to host more than one Web server for different departments or functions within an organization. For instance, BorderWare has proved to be an ideal solution for an Internet Service Provider Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.

BorderWare also ships with customizable security policies and incorporates Automatic Key Management, facilitating management of VPN tunnels. These features make BorderWare a very cost-effective way to offer the highest level of security in a wide variety of situations, including remote offices, internal Intranets, and departments of larger organizations.

The Sidewinder Security Server offers unparalleled flexibility that can be tailored to even the most complex security policies. Employing Secure Computing's patented Type Enforcement security, Sidewinder offers sophisticated access controls and advanced filtering mechanisms for World Wide Web, e-mail, and Java.

Also unique to Sidewinder is remote SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  monitoring and X.400/X.500 with mail filtering, making Sidewinder the only U.S. government Defense Messaging System (DMS (1) (Document Management System) See document management.

Sidewinder also incorporates a fine granularity of control of internal users, enabling the network administrator to authenticate and control Internet access to individuals or groups on an internal network.

Features In BorderWare 4.1 and Sidewinder 3.1

Already supporting Secure Computing's SafeWord authentication server, BorderWare 4.1 expands support for Secure Computing's SmartFilter URL filtering by increasing support for all 27 filtering categories and by including an automatic download feature for the SmartFilter Control List. BorderWare 4.1 also adds authentication support for Secure Computing's SafeWord Gold token card.

BorderWare 4.1 also includes support for Multiple Address Translation (MAT), which portrays the image of multiple servers to the external network, allowing an organization to host more than one Web server for different departments or functions behind a single BorderWare Firewall Server. In addition, MAT creates a load sharing mechanism that optimizes system performance.

BorderWare 4.1 now provides an integrated, seamless, and automatic VPN key management system. This feature provides a strong encryption method, automating and enhancing the productivity and accuracy of the key generation and exchange process.

Sidewinder 3.1 also integrates Secure Computing's SafeWord AS server, expanding the firewall's ability to authenticate users, adding an additional layer of security to the network.

"Sidewinder 3.1 represents a major achievement in the company's efforts to integrate core technologies from its different product divisions," said Nelson. "SafeWord adds an entirely new dimension to Sidewinder, which can now verify individual users on the Internet and grant access to services and proxies based on their profile. No other information security vendor offers its customers a more integrated, flexible solution tailored for organizations of virtually any size."

Sidewinder 3.1 also incorporates additional IPSEC encryption algorithms, including RC4 - 40 bit, RC4 - 128 bit, and DES 56 bit. Both RC4 - 40 and DES 56 bit are suitable for export outside North America, with the DES 56 bit standard being the strongest encryption available on a worldwide basis and serving as Secure Computing's global standard for VPN.

The latest version of Sidewinder also includes secure support for Progressive Networks' RealAudio proxy, allowing users to access audio-based information from the Internet and World Wide Web, just as text and graphics are accessed. Sidewinder 3.1 also incorporates protection against denial of service A condition in which a system can no longer respond to normal requests. See denial of service attack. , or so-called "SYN 1.
