 BB: MUZE) Thursday announced the release of AVS/Express(TM) Multipipe Edition (MPE MPE
abbr.
Master of Public Education
) Version 5.1.1, adding a host of features that allow users of large-scale visualization facilities such as the SGI (SGI, Sunnyvale, CA, www.sgi.com) A manufacturer of workstations and servers, founded in 1982 by Jim Clark. The company was founded as Silicon Graphics, Inc., but changed to its acronym in 1999. (TM) Reality Center(TM) or CAVE(R) to dynamically interact with data from technical, scientific and industrial disciplines.

The latest release is the result of joint-development activities by Advanced Visual Systems, SGI, Kubota Graphics Technologies (KGT KGT Key Generator Transmitter
KGT Klingon for the Galactic Traveller
 Inc.), and the Manchester Visualization Centre (MVC (Model View Controller) An architecture for building applications that separate the data (model) from the user interface (view) and the processing (controller). ), in conjunction with the International AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) A video compression technique developed by Chinese companies and supported by the Chinese government. Expected to provide better compression than MPEG-2, AVS was created to avoid paying royalties to the MPEG licensors, which are outside  Centre (IAC (1) (InterApplication Communications) The interprocess communications capability in the Macintosh starting with System 7.0. Many IAC events take place behind the scenes. ).

AVS/Express, on which the Multipipe Edition is based, enables rapid, object-oriented development of rich and highly interactive data visualization applications.

MPE extends these applications from the desktop domain to the realm of full 3D stereo immersion in large visualization theatres and presentation facilities by exploiting the power of SGI's Onyx2(R) high-performance workstations.

Sold as a comprehensive development system, the MPE software allows rapid construction of immersive applications without requiring a detailed understanding of the low-level multi-channel graphics programming. New features as of AVS/Express MPE 5.1.1 include:
-- Use of more-efficient Pthreads parallel rendering; previous versions used
process-based parallelism;

-- Two-pass transparency for improved appearance of transparent objects;

-- Frame Decomposition (DPLEX mode), which allows multiple windows, pipes and
channels to be combined to improve the frame rate in the final scene;

-- Multiple input devices, such as Head-tracking and Wand devices, via VRCO's
trackd software interface;

-- Support for new format MPK 1.0 configuration file (.mpconfig) and inclusion
of corresponding example .mpconfig files;

-- Expansion of MPE's already comprehensive suite of application examples with
new Medical, Seismic and Finance visualizations.
